12 Ideas for a creative teambuilding activity in Amsterdam

1. Paint & Sip in the Dark

In Amsterdam you can now take your traditional sip and paint event one step further: By doing it in the (almost) dark.

With the use of neon-paint even the least-creative colleague can get something beautiful on the canvas – or otherwise at least laugh wholeheartedly at their attempt.

Unleash your team’s inner artists with a paint and sip experience. Everyone gets a canvas, brushes and step-by-step guidance while enjoying a glass (or two) of wine. No skills needed, just a willingness to get messy and have fun. It’s creative, social and a guaranteed icebreaker.

Teams smaller than 8 can easily join one of the available public paint and sip classes, whereas teams with over 10 colleagues can book the whole studio to their self for a private teambuilding event .

Workshops last for 2 hours and include all materials, drinks on the house (not unimportant) and professional and enthusiastic art instructors.

2. Comedy and improvisation workshop

Two man walked in the park… alright – too early for my bad jokes but this workshop is a must-do in Amsterdam. Humor is one of the best tools for breaking down barriers. A comedy or improvisation workshop allows colleagues to step outside of their comfort zones in a safe and supportive environment. Teams learn to think on their feet, react quickly, and most importantly, share plenty of laughter.

3. Clay & Sip

For teams who want something hands-on, a low-key clay workshop at Rembrandt van Wine with drinks and music is a fantastic option. This is not pottery, this is getting your hands dirty with air drying clay. Instead of focusing on technical skills, the activity encourages participants to experiment with shaping and have fun.

After about 1 hour of clay work, everyone will then paint their creation meaning they will have a beautiful self-made memory of the team event to bring home afterwards too. It is all about creating, laughing, and celebrating the process together, which makes it a relaxed but highly engaging team event.

  • Enjoy your favourite music and all drinks on the house

4. Bike tour with a twist

Cycling is the Dutch way of life, and a bike tour is a classic way to see the city. By adding a twist such as a scavenger hunt, team challenges, or trivia stops along the way, the activity becomes interactive and competitive. It is a perfect way to combine sightseeing with collaboration.

5. Graffiti workshop

For a bold and artistic experience, try a graffiti workshop with a local street artist. Instead of working individually, the team collaborates on a large-scale mural. It is an excellent way to encourage creativity, break barriers, and leave behind a colourful reminder of your teamwork.

6. Outdoor bootcamp in Vondelpark

For teams who enjoy being active, an outdoor bootcamp in Amsterdam’s famous Vondelpark (or any other park of course) is a great option. Trainers lead exercises and team challenges designed to encourage motivation, support, and teamwork. It is a healthy and energising way to spend the day, especially for groups who want to balance work and wellness.

But mind the weather, this one is definitely one for the Dutch summer.

7. Canal cruise challenge

Amsterdam’s canals are world famous, and a private boat cruise is already a great team outing in itself. However, to turn it into a real team building activity, combine it with games, trivia, or challenges along the way. Whether it is solving riddles or completing a photo mission, this activity adds interaction and fun to the sightseeing experience.

8. Karaoke battle

Yup we really put this one on the list. We understand it is not for everyone but we simply think it is so fr\*king fun! Sometimes the simplest activities create the most fun. Organize a karaoke battle in one of Amsterdam’s lively bars and let the teams compete. Whether people are talented singers or completely off-key, the experience guarantees laughter and a shared sense of fun that will be remembered long after the event.

9. Silent disco walk

Silent discos are a phenomenon in Amsterdam, and you can take your team on a guided silent disco walk through the city. Everyone wears headphones, listens to the same playlist, and dances along while exploring the streets. It is lighthearted, slightly silly, and a guaranteed bonding experience.

You could even combine it with random guided walking tour facts about the city.

10. Houseboat brainstorm session

Guess you didn't know that – you can actually rent a houseboat in Amsterdam! Rent a houseboat for a few hours and use it as a creative space for team brainstorming sessions. Surrounded by water and a unique setting, it encourages out-of-the-box thinking while combining work and leisure.

11. Amsterdam film challenge

One of my personal favourites – Give teams a camera (smartphone works fine too) and a theme, then let them create a short film in just a few hours somewhere in the city. At the end, everyone gathers to watch the films together. It combines storytelling, creativity, and teamwork.

12. Axe throwing

Yup, not really my personal favourite, but it is definitely a creative option to spend your next team event. Get your axes out, and start throwing to hit the object. It is a bit. like darting only the men in the team will feel a bit more manly about it, and your muscle will be quite sore the next day.

Final thoughts

Amsterdam is packed with opportunities to shake up the standard office routine. From clay and painting to axe throwing and silent discos, there’s no shortage of ways to get your colleagues smiling and working together. The next time you’re looking for teambuilding activities for work, skip the awkward icebreakers and try something creative, hands-on and memorable.

By the way, we also wrote articles on creative teambuilding activities in Rotterdam and Eindhoven if you ever dare to take your team on the train to another city for a full day.
